Why I Started Investing in Index Funds Before Turning 30

I used to think investing meant picking the next big stock before everyone else did. Then I actually looked at the data—and realized most people (myself included) are terrible at that game.

Index funds changed how I think about money. Instead of chasing returns, I started thinking about time in the market versus timing the market. It’s less exciting than day-trading, but it’s let me sleep better at night.

Here’s what surprised me most: the hardest part isn’t picking the right fund. It’s doing nothing when the market drops 20% and every instinct says to sell. Building that emotional discipline took longer than building the portfolio itself.

If you’re in your 20s and just starting out, my advice is boring but true: automate your contributions, pick a low-cost index fund, and get comfortable being uninteresting at parties when the topic of investing comes up.
